Chapter 3 – Thinking of the future

Crunch walked on through the forest, until he stopped at a peaceful looking area, not too far from the seashores. It had some sand around, but also some long grasses, a few bushes and palms around. And in the center of the area was a small fireplace, which already had a spit, ready for roasting.

He went off from the area for a moment, to prepare, skin and gut his meal before cooking. It only took him a few minutes and he returned, to get the fire started. He stood there for a moment, and realized it’ll take long to get the flames going… so he grinned, and just stared at the fireplace and, just in an almost instant, the fireplace sparked and was lit. He couldn’t help but use the elementals now and then, which he still had in his possession around his wrist now, instead of his neck. Though he wouldn’t usually use them, unless he really wanted or needed to… but sometimes ‘little temptations’ get the better of him.

He went to place the pig onto the spit, and immediately started to cook it. He preferred his meat cooked, most of the time. Though he could have it raw too if he wanted, but the taste of too much blood sometimes makes him feel vicious and savage, which he didn’t like. He left the boar to cook on one side and waited… but as he waited, he noticed a bush to his far left. It had some berries, but no ordinary berries. He went over to pick a few, and tried one…

“Hmm, they don’t taste too sweet… just right.”

He said, and walked back over to where he was sitting. Most bandicoot species are omnivorous, meaning they like to eat either plant or meat, or insects for the smaller species. But Burgundy bandicoots mostly preferred meat, as they’re a lot bigger than most bandicoots and more ferocious, but they still would eat some plants, if they wanted. And Crunch didn’t mind a bit now and then, though he would only take fruit that isn’t too sweet, so Crash’s wumpa were out of his taste.

Crunch waited several more minutes, and by now, the sun had risen. Giving off a pleasant glow to the whole lighten area of the island. And now Crunch decided the feast was ready, which he had taken off the spit to cool down. He sat there for a moment though, and kept thinking more about the things that have been plaguing his mind lately…

“I am so lucky to have such a good life, after all the bad things that happened in the past… very lucky to have found even more happiness with Tani along the way, and even my own family but…”

Crunch thought. He still couldn’t help but feel that something didn’t seem right… despite life being near ‘perfect’ for him.

“But… my young. They were born from my mate, Tani but… do they really have a future? They do but, how can they, and their offspring, and so on really have a future for… real?”

Crunch thought more to himself, feeling confused and slightly worried.

“Brio cannot keep evolving animals forever… it just, doesn’t seem right. There has to be a way around this, there just has to… I don’t want my descendants to have no way of finding their life long partners and living on…”

Crunch then sighed, and noticed his meal was pretty much ready. But he thought again, before moving himself over…

“Hmm Brio… he must give some kind of explanation. There HAS to be a reason why the Evolvo-ray makes us into what we are, we cannot exist for no reason. If this is what evolution will do for our species over the many years, then I will find a way to get to where and when they will exist…”

Crunch now felt a bit less stressed. He is deeply concerned about the future of his family though, and doesn’t want them to come to an ‘end’, in which they have no way to ever have their own families much later down the bloodline. Crunch wanted to find out more about what the purpose of his and everyone else’s evolutions were.

“Sigh, I shouldn’t worry so much about it now. I should just be glad to have such a nice home, with the most wonderful family you can ever wish for… and also, really good food… heh…”

He said, with a smile. Before quickly grabbing the now cooked boar. He crunched onto the side, to rip off the crispy, cooked skin, which he didn’t want to eat. He used his smaller front teeth to peel off the bits of white flesh from the bones, which he enjoyed immensely. He then tilted his head to the side to bite at the ribcage, crunching the ribs fairly easy, to reach more of the cooked flesh. Sometimes he’d eat some of the bones too, if they were tasty and chewy enough, and they provided him with calcium also. It only took less than an hour for him to be full, and he lay there on the sand, looking satisfied. With only some bones laying around from the carcass. He snoozed for a bit, but then remembered something.

“Damn! I told Tani I’d be back just after dawn… better head off back home now then”

He said to himself, and quickly got up. He yawned for a moment and stretched, before walking off back into the direction he came.
